Faith & Freedom Coalition Commends Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for Championing School Reopening

DULUTH, Ga. – The Faith & Freedom Coalition applauds Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos for encouraging students to go back to school in the fall. Along with the rest of the Trump administration, Secretary DeVos has urged American parents not to give way to fear. With proper health and safety measures in place, students can return to school and get the education they deserve. A parent’s right to choose how their child is educated is a hallmark of a free society, and Secretary DeVos has repeatedly distinguished herself as one of today’s most ardent defenders of that right.

“From the moment her nomination was announced, Secretary DeVos has been subject to relentless cruelty from the mainstream media – yet she continues to stand firm,” said Timothy Head, executive director of the Faith & Freedom Coalition. “This current moment is no exception. We applaud the secretary for her bold leadership, and we trust that parents across America will take courage from her example and send their kids back to school.”

Other federal leaders are working to equip parents to send their children to the school of their choice. Chairman of the Senate Education Committee Lamar Alexander and Sen. Tim Scott have introduced the School Choice Now Act, which provides emergency financial support to the many parents whose ability to send their children to the school of their choice has been threatened by COVID-19.

The legislation stipulates that 10% of emergency federal aid to states and local school districts be put towards state-approved scholarship-granting organizations to help families with homeschooling expenses and private-school tuition. It also establishes permanent tax credits of up to $5 billion for these organizations. Such changes will empower parents to choose a school that best fits their child’s education needs, regardless of zip code or income bracket.
