WASHINGTON, D.C. – “On behalf of the Faith & Freedom Coalition, we express our condolences to Rayshard Brooks’ family and loved ones. We ask God to comfort his widow and children at this time of loss. We are deeply saddened and shocked by the death of this 27-year-old father of four fatally shot by an Atlanta police officer.
“The police officer who killed Brooks has been fired and the Atlanta police chief has resigned. We now urge the GBI, the city of Atlanta, and Fulton county to thoroughly investigate Brooks’ death and insure that justice is done. We also call for reforms of police procedures in Atlanta and nationwide to insure that there is better training, adoption of clear de-escalation protocols, and clearer guidelines on the use of lethal force.
“The vast majority of police do an excellent job every single day protecting our cities and neighborhoods at great risk of their own safety and lives, and we are grateful for their service. Brooks failed a sobriety test and resisted arrest, so he could have made better decisions. But that should not have required the loss of his life.
“This tragedy, like the case of George Floyd, reminds us that blacks are two-and-a-half times more likely to be killed by police than whites. We condemn all racial injustices and disparities in our criminal justice system and call on better tactics and procedures by law enforcement.
“Faith & Freedom will continue to work for reforms of law enforcement and the criminal justice system until every American can be confident they are treated equally and fairly.”
