Faith & Freedom Coalition Responds to State Regulations Against Religious Services

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Faith & Freedom Coalition applauds the efforts by the Trump administration, Trump-appointed judges, Attorney General William Barr and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to prevent state leaders from infringing on religious freedom by prohibiting worship services during the COVID-19 crisis.

Last week Kentucky Governor Beshear announced that anyone who drives their car to a large gathering could have their license plate number recorded. Local health authorities would then reach out to the driver and command them to self-isolate for two weeks. Greg Fischer, mayor of Louisville, Kentucky, likewise barred churches from holding drive-in services in parking lots. Similarly, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly issued an executive order forbidding religious and funeral services of over 10 people.

Several key conservative leaders have spoken out against these bans as infringements on religious liberty, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, U.S. Senator Rand Paul and Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY). A Trump-appointed federal judge in Kentucky quickly deemed the ban on drive-in services unconstitutional, and Governor Kelly’s executive order is currently being considered in the Kansas Supreme Court. Attorney General William Barr has announced his intent to ensure that social distancing policies do not unfairly target religious organizations.

“On behalf of the over two million members and supporters of the Faith & Freedom Coalition, I applaud these leaders for protecting religious freedom during this time of great restrictions due to COVID-19,” said Faith & Freedom Coalition Executive Director Timothy Head. “These cases show just how important judges are, and that is why we are thankful that President Trump has appointed two Supreme Court justices, 51 appeals court judges, and 138 district court judges during his presidency — all of whom stand for religious freedom.”
