DULUTH, Ga. – The Faith & Freedom Coalition applauds the work of Tennessee pro-life activists and leaders for their work to pass wraparound pro-life legislation. In addition to banning abortions after the infant’s heartbeat is detected, the bill also bans doctors from performing abortion procedures when they know the woman is requesting the procedure because of the infant’s sex, race or Down Syndrome diagnosis.
It also requires doctors to tell the woman about her child’s gestational age, play the child’s heartbeat out loud and display ultrasound images. Additionally, doctors who have performed more than 50 abortions must post notifications alerting women that some drug-induced abortions can be reversed.
“This news from Tennessee is just the encouragement pro-life advocates need after the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a Louisiana pro-life bill,” said Timothy Head, executive director of the Faith & Freedom Coalition. “Despite deadlock at the federal level, we’ve seen time and time again how local and state activists can make a difference and support laws that defend innocent unborn babies. We applaud state leaders for their work to get the bill to the governor’s desk and look forward to its signature.”
The bill has successfully passed the Tennessee General Assembly and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has announced his intention to sign it. He praised the legislation as “the strongest pro-life bill in our state’s history” and commended leaders for their commitment to defending the vulnerable unborn.
