WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Supreme Court ruled in favor of religious freedom in a duo of cases brought before the court on Wednesday. In Little Sisters of the Poor Saints Peter and Paul Home v. Pennsylvania, the Supreme Court affirmed, with a 7-2 ruling, the broad religious exemptions granted by the Trump administration to an Obama-era mandate that required employer-provided health insurance to cover contraceptives. In another 7-2 ruling, the Supreme Court decided in Our Lady of Guadalupe School v. Morrissey-Berru that religious schools are protected against employee discrimination lawsuits.
Both of these 7-2 rulings represent major victories for religious freedom. The American people deserve to have their religious freedom defended by American law. We at Faith & Freedom Coalition applaud the Supreme Court’s decisions and welcome this defense of religious freedom by America’s highest judicial authority.
“Religious freedom is foundational to the Founding Fathers’ experiment in liberty and self-government,” said Timothy Head, executive director of the Faith & Freedom Coalition. “When religious freedom flourishes, America flourishes too.”
The Supreme Court’s two rulings on Wednesday coincide with a ruling last week that struck down restrictions on state aid to religious schools. In a 5-4 ruling in Espinoza et. al. v. Montana Department of Revenue et. al., the Supreme Court decided in favor of using public tax credits to fund the choice of religious private schools. All three rulings signal an emerging consensus on the Supreme Court in defense of an expansive view of religious liberty.
