Statement On U.S. Supreme Court Decision In Trinity Lutheran v. Comer

Duluth, GA – Faith & Freedom Coalition Executive Director Tim Head issued the following statement on today’s landmark religious freedom decision by an overwhelming 7-2 vote in the U.S. Supreme Court in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia v. Comer case where the state of Missouri’s denial of state grant money to improve Trinity Lutheran’s playground, solely because the playground belongs to a religious organization, was ruled un-Constitutional. “Today is a landmark day for the defense of religious freedom in the United States as the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled overwhelmingly that states may not discriminate against religious institutions. At the heart of this case is the anti-Catholic ‘Blaine’ amendment passed in Missouri and 36 other states late in the 19th Century, to deny state services to Roman Catholics. Now that the Court has rightfully ruled in favor of Trinity Lutheran, the time has come to overturn and strike down the Blaine Amendment in Missouri and the other states where discrimination against religious organizations is written into law.”
