WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on police reform in the United States designed to promote public safety and officer safety. The executive order outlines the administration’s efforts to better train officers, track officer misconduct and involve social workers and mental health professionals in some cases. On behalf of the more than two million members and supporters of the Faith & Freedom Coalition, we commend President Trump for improving law enforcement and for taking immediate action on police misconduct.
The executive order does three things. First, it uses federal grants to help police departments meet higher certification and credentialing standards, including use of force standards. Second, it facilitates information sharing between police departments by creating a database to track police officers with multiple instances of misconduct. Third, through existing funding at the Departments of Justice and Health & Human Services, it will establish co-responder programs that include social workers and mental health professionals on police calls dealing with homelessness, mental illness and addiction.
“We are fortunate to have a leader such as President Trump who supports equal justice for all Americans while recognizing his duty to keep our communities safe,” said Timothy Head, executive director of the Faith & Freedom Coalition. “As his support of the First Step Act demonstrated, Trump is an ally in the fight to end racial inequalities and reform our justice system to promote justice and safety. This executive order is just another example of President Trump working to bring positive change in our nation.”
The executive order comes after President Trump hosted a roundtable discussion last week with local religious leaders, small business owners and law enforcement to discuss race and policing.
