Faith & Freedom Coalition Responds to the Case of Ahmaud Arbery

DULUTH, Ga. – On behalf of the Faith & Freedom Coalition, Chairman Ralph Reed released the following statement on the case surrounding the murder of Ahmaud Arbery:

“The verdict in the Ahmaud Arbery case cannot bring him back, but we hope it provides some comfort and justice to his family. We are grateful to the jury, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the prosecution team for ensuring justice was done. No young person, white or black, should lose their life in this way.”

Three accused men were found guilty of murdering Ahmaud Arbery after chasing and fatally shooting Arbery in February 2020 as he jogged through the coastal community of Satilla Shores, just outside of Brunswick, Georgia.

A jury convicted Travis McMichael, the man who shot Arbery, on each of the nine counts that he was facing, including malice murder, felony murder, false imprisonment and aggravated assault. His father, Gregory McMichael, was found guilty on eight counts, including felony murder and aggravated assault. The man who recorded the shooting, William “Roddie” Bryan, was convicted on six counts, including felony murder and aggravated assault.

The shooting happened after the defendants jumped in their pick-up trucks and chased Arbery to detain him, believing he might have been responsible for recent property crimes in the neighborhood. Travis McMichael, the only defendant to take the witness stand, said he fired his shotgun at Arbery in self-defense. No evidence emerged that Arbery ever stole anything on his frequent runs through Satilla Shores. He was killed with nothing in his pockets, not even a mobile phone or wallet.
