WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Faith & Freedom Coalition celebrates Juneteenth and the anniversary of the recognition and enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in the state of Texas in 1865. It was 155 years ago today that U.S. Major General Gordon Granger issued an order announcing that enslaved individuals had been freed through an executive order. On behalf of the Faith & Freedom Coalition, Executive Director Timothy Head released the following statement.
“Today we celebrate Juneteenth and reflect on the painful reality of slavery in our country’s history and the racial injustice that continues today. The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks and many others have underscored the urgency of justice reform and the need to restore the full American promise to all Americans, regardless of race. The Faith & Freedom Coalition has long advocated for justice reform and an end to mass incarceration, and will continue to push for solutions that help America live up to its promises of freedom, justice and equality for all.”
