Faith & Freedom Coalition Applauds USDA, Private-Sector Partners for Expansion of Meals to You During COVID-19

DULUTH, Ga. – The Faith & Freedom Coalition applauds the U.S. Department of Agriculture for expanding its Meals to You program, an initiative in partnership with the Baylor University Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty, McLane Global and PepsiCo. Originally planning on serving one million meals a week to low-income children in rural areas across 12 states, the program has increased its commitment and plans to serve five million meals each week across a total of 35 states and Puerto Rico. The meals are a critical service to the many children in rural communities experiencing food insecurity due to COVID-19 school closures.

“The Faith & Freedom Coalition applauds USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue, the executive director of Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty, and the leadership of McLane Global and PepsiCo for making this commitment,” said Timothy Head, executive director of the Faith & Freedom Coalition. “It’s tempting to adopt a scarcity mindset in times of crisis, but these leaders are doing just the opposite: They’re digging in and leveraging their resources to help the families most deeply affected by COVID-19. We are encouraged by their example and confident that their actions will greatly strengthen the communities they serve.”

Meals to You supplies kids eligible for free and reduced-price meals at their local public schools with packages containing twenty meals: the five breakfasts and five lunches they would otherwise have at school. These meals adhere to USDA’s Summer Food Service meal standards and include foods like milk, fruit cups, whole-grain crackers and chili. Students receive these packages via the U.S. Postal Service or other delivery services.
