Physician General Rachel Levine, who is a transgender woman herself, gave a presentation on transgender medicine, gender identity, and sexual orientation at Franklin and Marshall College. Levine clearly outlined how physicians are ought to approach anyone under the age of 18 who wishes to undergo transgender treatment. This process includes the usage of hormonal therapy which pauses and postpones the child’s progression of puberty, so that the child “does not go through the wrong puberty,” according to Levine. The child can then be further evaluated and be given gender confirmation surgery, previously called sexual reassignment surgery, as long as they fully understand the surgery and have external support to go through it with them.
