Washington, DC – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of devout Christian and master baker Jack Phillips by a vote of 7-2 in the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission case. Faith & Freedom Coalition Founder and Chairman Ralph Reed issued the following statement in response to today’s ruling.
“The Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision in favor of the Christian baker in Colorado is an important victory for freedom of speech, freedom of artistic expression and religious liberty. By ruling that the state of Colorado violated the constitutional rights of a baker whose objection to baking the custom cake arose from the precepts of his faith and the demands of his conscience, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed that the Constitution protects freedom of speech, including speech of a religious content, and the state cannot compel speech against the will of the individual. While we continue to believe that Obergfell was wrongly decided, this decision is an important corrective in protecting people of faith from being forced to violate their deeply held religious beliefs.”
